Program Duration
The program of Bachelor degree in Faculty of Health Sciences is a four years full time course. A year is comprising two semesters of 18
weeks of study and 2 weeks for examinations which makes a total of 20 weeks.
The first year establishes the foundation for the study of nursing and with an introduction to concepts, principals and theories related to understanding pre-medical, and fundamentals in nursing practice, and introduction to and Care.
In the second year with the continuation of pre-medical nursing and focuses on identification of health risk factors- diseases, and promotion of principle of nursing and management. The medical nursing skills are practiced first in the university’s Laboratory.
- Program Rationale
The level of health education and health status of a country’s population has direct influence on the national and economic development. Nurses play an important role in any country health services since they are health providers. Nurses are the largest deliverer of health care in any country, they are the heart and soul of the hospitals and health centers.
The rapid growth and dynamic nature of medicine in general and nursing in particular demands that nurses are trained in order to acquire and develop the capacity for creativity, independent medical and clinical reasoning, problem solving and decision making ability and skills that enable them to deliver quality health services.
As the community demands for nurse survives increases and because of the shortage of trained nurses and training institutions for nurses in The country. Hospitals confront challenges with regard to nursing involvement, including: scarcity of nurses and nursing resources.
Due to these, Eelo University has decided to address this problem by including in the academic programs and give first priority to offer the Bachelor degree course in nursing and midwifery. The faculty of nursing and was established in 2016 and the main reason behind the establishment of the faculty of nursing is to continually respond the demand from health care industry in country.
The faculty of nursing provides a high quality, efficient and comprehensive health training for nurses in the country. The program will produce a high quality, efficient and qualified and competent nurse and who is proficient in nursing, and community health care
2. Program description
Education for the practice of professional nursing demands a substantial knowledge of nursing, using the behavioral and biological sciences as a theoretical base. The program provides a foundation for graduate education in nursing and midwifery, and serves as a stimulus for continuing professional development.
The first year establishes the foundation for the study of nursing and with an introduction to concepts, principals and theories related to understanding premedical, and fundamentals in nursing practice, and introduction to and Care.
In the second year with the continuation of premedical nursing and focuses on identification of health risk factors- diseases, and promotion of principle of nursing and management. The medical nursing skills are practiced first in the university’s Laboratory.
Third year nursing courses focus on clinical practices and how to care of individuals and families of all ages who are experiencing the stress of illness. During this year the learner will be acquiring knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable him/her promote health, prevent illness, diagnose, manage and coordinate rehabilitation of patients of all ages.
During the fourth year, student medical experiences are planned to encourage synthesis of knowledge gained in preceding years and focus on individuals, families, and communities. For practicing purposes students attend and offer free health services to venerable people who are experiencing more complex illnesses and problems by visiting hospitals, MCH and selected locations in the country with experienced doctors.
Professional role behaviors that are augmented during the years of subsequent study are expanded during the last year. The professional school of nursing trains undergraduate students in all aspects of the nursing profession, from promoting healthy behavior to providing health care in rural and urban settings. Students have an opportunity to work on faculty research projects and practicing real-life clinical experiences within the university’s hospital. There are also nearby government and private hospitals as well as other community and organizations healthcare facilities.

- Goals of the program
The overall goals of the Bachelor degree course in Nursing is:
- Produce professional nurse and workforce’s to address the current challenges and enhance effective and quality health care delivery in The country
- Produce a competent nurse who have knowledge, skills and attitudes that offer valuable care to individual, family and the community, thus improving the quality of life of the people of The country
- To addresses the dynamic and constantly changing environment of working professionals by helping learners in reaching their professional and personal goals within the scope of the degree program
- Aims of the program
The general objectives of the Bachelor degree in nursing and are:
- To provide learners the basic scientific knowledge, skills and attitudes which assist a comprehensive understanding of disciplines related to nursing and midwifery
- To enhance the learner’s deep understanding of innovative concepts, principles and approaches in health for quality, affordable and equitable nursing care
- Facilitate To develop the research awareness and skills of critical enquiry that enhance evidence based nursing practice
- Provide an opportunity for the learner to develop and apply critical thinking and reflective skills in nursing as they perform their roles in health care system
C. Program Objectives
By the end of the Bachelor degree program the nurse Trainee will be able to:
- Acquire knowledge from nursing, , biophysical, and social sciences in the practice of professional nursing
- Promote utilization of social and economic factors that promote health and discourage those that are damaging to health by providing health education services for individuals, families, groups, and communities.
- Apply thorough understanding of theories, concepts, principles and skills of critical analysis and problem solving in provision of high quality care to patients
- Recognize the casual organisms of the common diseases affecting his/her patients and be able to apply infection prevention strategies
- Display skills in critical thinking and decision making in the use of the nursing and processes with individuals, families, groups, and communities experiencing health problems.
- Intervene, promote, restore, and maintain the maximum health potential of individuals, families, groups, and communities.
- Assume responsibility and accountability for own decisions and actions in the practice of nursing.
- Analyze the rationale for and administration of specific drugs to patients and be able to identify and act appropriately on undesired on drugs
- Utilize the knowledge of biochemistry to correct the altered process brought by illness, determine the pathological process in various diseases and be able to give appropriate care
- Incorporate professional values, such as ethical and legal aspects and demonstrate competence in communication as he/she articulates issues affecting the patient, the family and the public
4. Admission Policy and requirements
The faculty of Nursing admits applicants who :
- Are Secondary graduates and have attained a minimum grade mark of 70%
- Is transferring from other health institutions
- Good knowledge in scientific subjects (biology, chemistry) is very crucial to the understanding of health and disease, excellent communication skills and a commitment to constant learning are also crucial
- Program load and Duration
The program of Bachelor degree in nursing is a four years full time course. The full course load is — hours. A year is comprising two semesters of 18 weeks of study and 2 weeks for examinations which makes a total of 20 weeks. The first Semester starts in August and ends in January, while the second semester began in February and ends in June. Each semester ends with one week reserved for examinations.
- Qualification
At the end of the program students will gain Bachelor degree in nursing and after successfully completing the theoretical and practical aspect of the 4-year degree program
- Teaching and learning approaches
To enhance quality education, the course is delivered through traditional and innovative teaching and learning methods. The learner will also give opportunities to develop skills in research techniques and methodology through assignments or research projects.
- Access to Patient Contact
From the first semester, the learner will have access direct contacts with patients at university hospital or in other health centers
- Assessment of students performance
Assessment and evaluation Rules and regulations
All the students studying at college of medical sciences and their patents are required to have information on the examination system of bachelor degree in nursing which will take place according to the Eelo University Examination rules and regulations.
Assessment of Nurses is based on performance evaluation. Continuous assessment tests is used throughout the program. The assessment of clinical and practical skills shall be done using a checklist which will be assessed by minimum of two assessors in clinical placement. Since this is a competency based program, the assessment marks for all course of study shall be pass or fail.
If a student is poor in attendance in one or more subjects he/she will not be allowed to appear for the examination of that or those subject(s) of the particular examination. If a student is poor in attendance, he/she should make up the attendance in that subject before permitted to set for the examination.
Student are encouraged to clear all the subjects of year 1 before proceeding into semester three of year 2. .A student will be allowed to join the second year if he/she fails in any number of year 1 examinations, However he/she is allowed chances to appear in the failed subjects during the vocation period.
If a student fails to cover all core subject of year 1 and year 2 of the university examinations, he/she will be held in the second year and will not be promoted to third year unless he/she satisfied the requirements.. A student who fails the practical/clinical courses shall be required to repeat the same course during next academic year.
A candidate shall be declared successful candidate for graduation when all his/her examination results are cleared.
- The Program Introduction
The constitution of Somaliland has endorsed health as basic human right of every citizen. The Government has expressed its commitment to comply with the spirit of the interim constitution and has made several health policy reforms towards this direction. Among other factors, role of health professionals has been seen as vital for the efficiency and effectiveness of health care system.
With the epidemiological transition, the country is facing double burden of diseases. Rapid urbanization, changing life style with exposure to newer risks, rising mobility across the globe, impact of climate change, increased global relations and many other factors have made the solution of health problems more challenging than before. This situation has apparently demanded further competencies among the health work force. In view of this, the present BPH program has been developed with enhancement and improvement of previous three years curriculum.
- Objectives of BPH program
The overall purpose of BPH program is to prepare competent and responsible public health graduates needed for the country to respond to the health needs of people. The objectives of the program is to enable the graduates with Bachelor in Public Health degree to
- Explain relevance of basic health sciences in public health
- Appreciate behavioral, socio-cultural, economic and other dimension of health and diseases
- Analyze health systems from public health perspective – effectiveness, efficiency, equity and justice
- Manage – plan, implement, monitor and evaluate – health systems, programs and services
- Train and manage human resources for health
- Conduct health research for evidence based decision making process in public health
- Demonstrate leadership to organize and mobilize community to address health problems
- Scope of degree of Bachelor in Public Health
Public health graduates will have a wide range of working scope in public and private sectors, as well as in service and academic sectors. The graduates with BPH degree can serve as public health officer or other position at the national, regional, district and community level in the government;
in national and international non-government organizations. With their competency in academic area, public health graduates can work in the training and research institutions.
As further career opportunity, public health graduates are eligible for Master in Public Health (MPH) program and other relevant master programs.
